Hi all!
We are excited to offer some new options regarding myopia management at our offices.
What is myopia management you may ask?
Myopia, or near-sightedness is a growing concern within our young population. About fifty years ago, only 25% of the population was myopic, currently that statistic is 40%, with numbers increasing. Myopia develops when the eye is longer than average. One source of myopia incidence can be related to increased near visual demands from computers, tablets, smartphones and the like. The larger demand to focus for sustained periods of time stimulates the growth of the eye leading to more and larger amounts of myopia. Often, myopia is easily corrected with glasses and contact lenses, but unlike other refractive errors, the higher the correction, the more at risk an individual can be for medical ocular conditions such as retinal detachments, glaucoma, or maculopathy. In recent years, many treatments have been studied to intervene at a young age, to prevent any worsening of a patient’s myopia.
There a few avenues to pursue when considering myopia management. Some of them have been around for other purposes and others are newer technologies. If you are interested in in any of these options for your child, please call and schedule an appointment today for a comprehensive eye exam and myopia evaluation with one of our doctors!
